"Moonlight is Sculpture..." - Nathaniel Hawthorne

Luna Studio 47 has been conceived through the marriage of  James Joseph Howes' love for Astronomy, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and his expertise as a talented and exhibited multi disciplined three dimensional maker and educationalist.

Whether creating sculpture with elegant silhouettes, fractal like the surface of the Moon or domestic furniture that illuminates a tranquil corner of twilight in a home, light is at the core of James's work, a fundamental principle of Luna Studio 47.

James's most recent works exist somewhere between fine art and domestic furniture. as he describes "just like our planet everyone deserves their own celestial neighbour, illuminating their home at night."

James has worked in association with industry to deliver public sculptures to completion. Luna Studio 47 can therefore offer its services to design public art.

He holds a BA (Hons) in Art History & Studio Practice from John Ruskin University Cambridge as well as a MA (in Fine Art/Sculpture) from the University of East London. From there he completed his PGCE at the University of Greenwich and has taught Art and Design to post 16 students for over 20 years. Finally, he has been accepted onto the PhD in Education with the University of Greenwich.

Luna Studio 47 is therefore also a tool for education and guidance, James can offer outreach educational services to those wishing to learn some of the traditional skills in three dimensional making and assist in portfolio building.

Throughout his career, he has developed sculptures at a variety of scales, from intimate interiors to expansive public pieces. Whether you are a collector of art looking for their new prized possession or a city seeking a new monument, look no further than Luna Studio 47.

James is keen to use his extensive skill set to offer commissions personal to you and your needs and desires.

The 'Luna' Studio -

where the magic happens

The home of `Luna Studio 47’ resides in a conservation area within a grade II listed early 18th century Georgian Cottage (the original old dairy.)  The cottage overlooks the beautiful village green in the quintessentially English village of Rawcliffe, East Riding of Yorkshire. The Studio is in James's attic and is as close to the moon as he could physically get. He also has an exterior working area for large open air work requiring welding and assembling or to bask in the moonlight.
